Sulfur has two valence bonds, not one. Using empty d orbitals, sulfur forms one to six bonds, phosphorous one to five. In biological reactions, sulfur often forms two or six bonds. See new visual: http://examkrackers.com/pdf/CHEMISTRY-LECTURE-2-p-52-Figure2-2.pdf
